Friends,
To most of you the situation in Nicaragua may have gone unnoticed. Nevertheless, it is worsethan even the interational press is claiming. The elected president, the sandinist Ortega, is increasing the pressure on any kind of opposition a short time before the municipal elections. Pressures on the press, researchers, NGOs and any kind of individual or institution who may protest or be critical are effectively turning the regime into a dictatorship in practice. Before his election, Ortega scealed an agreement with the opposition by which he would free from prison the former President, Arnaldo Alemán (emprisoned for corruption as he deviated to his personal accounts substantial international aid funds aimed at releaving the consequences of hurrican Mitch). In exchange, he got the implicit support of the opposition and judges. Corruption levels are extremely high and do not ensure the rights to be expected in a democracy, even a young and clumsy one.
There is probably not much we can do beyond at least being informed, passing the word and hoping that some international pressure might help solve things.
For those of you who understand spanish, I am enclosing below paragraphs written by friends of mine who are in Nicaragua and suffering the repression on their own person (and which I will maintain anonymous for abvious reasons).
FRIEND 1, university student, is being accused in public TV of instigating violence behind a peaceful demonstration against manipulation of public media (see video below), but he was not even in the country!
FRIEND 2, employed in a Foundation that distributed Funds to small groups of Women who fight for their Human Rights:
FRIEND 3, foreign researcher conducting his PhD in Nicaragua and married to a Nicaraguan woman
